Often times the places hardest to get to turn out to be the best and perhaps seem all the better for the effort it takes to get there. The surreal landscape surrounding and encompassing The Salar de Uyuni is one such destination. Situated on the Bolivian altiplano, this bizarre congregation of multi-colored lakes, active volcanoes, rare wildlife, and its focal and inexhaustibly huge salt plain cannot but help leave even the most jaded traveler with mouth agape. Any one of its many sights would warrant investigation. But the odd jumbled mixture of pink flamingos feeding in a near iridescent orange lake with a green volcano looming in the background is awe-inspiring. That it comes on the heels of traversing a vast near blinding white plain of salt is all the more baffling. Add to this, the weather beaten towns that dot this harsh terrain along with their hardy inhabitants and you have all the makings for an adventure not to be missed. So, take the crazy overnight bus ride from La Paz down to Uyuni, sign up for a 4-wheel drive tour of this special and rare landscape. You might not ever do it again, but you will be glad you did it just that once.
