Munich's varied architecture is a tourist draw - Bavaria

Munich's varied architecture is a tourist draw

Munich

Munich needs no introductions and will surely be on most people'sGermany itineraries. This is for good reason too. It's a big city with all the cultural advantages but still retains a small village feeling, with great open green parks and lots of outdoors eating and drinking opportunities if the weather permits. In close proximity to the Bavarian Alps, it is a city full of sports loving citizens who seize the first opportunity to enjoy their magnificent surroundings.

Directions: Located in south Bavaria, in the foothills of the Alps and Austria.

a smoky gem, Bamberg - Bavaria

a smoky gem, Bamberg

Bamberg

Though not exactly off the beaten path, Bamberg has thus escaped being overly touristy and remains one of Germany's true gems. Blessed with a plethora of architectual styles, it is a sheer pleasure to wander around its cobblestone streets. It is also home to Rauchbier, a smoky delight once popular throughout this region and now a specialty of only the immediate surroudings.

Directions: Three hours north of Munich by frequent trains and in the heart of Franconia (northern Bavaria).

the shade of a beer garden - Bavaria

the shade of a beer garden

Visit a beer garden

If there is one thing you should do in Bavaria and particularly in Munich, it is visit a beer garden. The best ones are in big parks, with lots of shady trees. Traditionally, they just served beer and you could bring your own food but now most act as great open air restaurants. It is a place for people from all walks of life to escape the summer's heat and relax amongst the laughter and talking of up to 8000 neighbors in the biggest ones!

Directions: There are beer gardens everywhere, especially in Munich. I will detail some in my restaurant tips.

the Bavarian Alps in winter - Bavaria

the Bavarian Alps in winter

The Bavarian Alps

Garmish is well noted for its skiing but is also a prime destination for hiking due to its location in the Bavarian Alps. I have had too little time here to fully explore it and though a bit touristy, the one hike I did do was stunning. A must for all outdoors enthusiasts!

Directions: A little over an hour south of Munich by frequent trains.
