Some destinations take you by storm by entering your subconscious through a constant bombardment of media sources that such places exude. This can lead to utter disappointment as the human mind works a level of magic that few physical places can equal. Then there are some that you happen upon with very little prior knowledge. With little expectation there can be a profound feeling of satisfaction through the discovery of such gems in the raw. Bautzen would fall into the latter category for about 99% of the population. You would have to be from the former East Germany to have heard enough about it to have any expectations whatsoever. An iconic image registered subliminally in my mind when I passed this medieval city on the way to Görlitz some time back. It was a lost photo opportunity that haunted me until I was able to return to capture it. This image gave me an impetus to return but to be honest set up very little in the way of expectation. So, while I was not completely unaware of what lie ahead of me I was more than prepared to discover what I ignorantly assumed was a diamond in the ruff. While I found a beautiful city at the end of the journey, unpolished it was not. One thing I did accomplish though was I captured an image that was even better than my memory’s eye had and that is something I know from experience is not an easy thing to do. Bautzen will not disappoint any who venture there. Is that because expectation will be nil? I’ll leave that for you to decide. |
