another Wat, so what?
Battambang’s other Wat is another mysterious if pleasant place to make a stop. Again, there is little information about it, in town, in any guidebooks, or on the Internet. This doesn’t seem to make any difference; the real attraction is the friendly monks that though more shy than their Angkor counterparts, are no less anxious to practice their English on you. In fact, they are more so as they don’t see anywhere near the number of visitors. Doreen was there alone one day and was invited into a nearby school to "teach" a group of school children.
Directions: This is across the street from the main post office and close to the Battambang Museum too.
shades of another era, The Governor's Residence
I’m really not sure if you can visit the inside of the Governor’s Residence in Battambang. This is one of the disadvantages of the town not being a bona fide tourist attraction-the lack of an infrastructure. I’m sure it may one day be open and publicized but for now, I just enjoyed seeing it through the fence. It harkened me back to a grander time. It is also quite an interesting walk over to the residence and there are a few other things to check out while over that way.
Directions: If you walk south along the Stung Sangker, you'll come to a fork in the road. Take the right prong and you'll be there in a couple blocks.
tranquil Stung Sangker
It’s not likely you’ll miss the Stung Sangker as the river is the focal point of local life and you will find yourself wandering along it most days you are there. The best time is early morning before it gets too hot when the sun’s first rays provide the optimal light for snapping photos of the French Colonial shops that line the river. If you’re smart, you’ll be taking a boat on this very river to Siem Reap, rather than the dusty bus trip!
Directions: IMPOSSIBLE to miss.
worth a peek, Battambang Museum
It’s true that at $1, the Battambang Museum will seem expensive by local standards but there are fine carvings from around the province on display. Of course, it would be nice if there were some explanation of what things are and perhaps with time, this will be the case. But enjoy it for what it is as if foreigners do not frequent it, it’s not likely to remain open. It’s a shame it is only open in the morning and afternoon. It would be a perfect place to go in the midday heat!
Directions: On Phaluv 1, right along the river and on your way out to the Governor's Residence.
colorful Wat Phiphetaram
Admittedly the vast majority of travelers that come to Battambang make the journey to either enjoy the simplicity of village life in the countryside or to do the arduous though scenic boat trip to Siem Reap. Still, there are some sights in the city proper like Wat Phiphetaram. Though there is little information on this colorful wat, it is worth a visit. We arrived in the evening and ventured over to find a group of friendly young monks readying themselves for a festival. Though busy, they took time to show us around and practice their English. It was too dark to take a photo so I snapped this the next morning. But what I remember is not really the wat, but the monks and the atmosphere of the evening air leading up to the festival that night.
Directions: On Phaluv 3 at the northern end of town.
Battambang's bountiful architecture
It’s true that if you travel anywhere in Cambodia, you’re bound to come across your share of French Colonial architecture but Battambang has some of the best preserved examples of the style and also an overall homogeneous feel as a town. The combined effect of these timeless Spartan buildings and the town’s dusty streets makes for a Wild West aura that many find charming. The best place to check this out is along the Stung Sangker (river) with morning the best time for taking photos.
Directions: Examples are all over town but along the river is perhaps the best place to get photos.
