We have visited Dover several times, crossing from the continent with the tunnel gets you there quickly. We have had several holidays in the area as well as using Dover as the point to set from for holidays elsewhere.
The strategic position and the natural harbour mean that Dover has always played an important part in England’s defence. Dover is one of original Cinque Ports, the others being: Hastings, Romney, Hythe, and Sandwich.
During the Norman Conquest national government was weak and because of threats from Europe it was important that the Saxon kings were on good terms with the Channel ports. The ports were to supply the royal fleet with ships and men and in return they were granted the right to levy taxes and later were later given other rights. These rights were revoked in the 17th century. The name Cinque came from the French word for five.

Interesting, thanks for sharing.
Great suggestions, Bodiham castle looks somewhat secret :-) Hmm... I just think over how much time is needed to visit all these places and... the whole England, Scotland and Wales haha.
Good morning Margaret, glad you had the chance to visit Dover, i live just down the coast at Folkestone, beautiful coastal walks around this area, i hope you liked the area.
Great tips on Dover and surroundings! I hope everything is well! Have a great weekend, Margaret!
Good tips Margeret. I have a week's holiday in Kent booked for early September, and Chartwell and Dover Castle are on the list of places to visit.
