In 1987 Venice and its lagoon were collectively designated a World Heritage site.
Venice is a major seaport, and capital of both the province of Venezia and the region of Veneto. It is an island city and it used to be the centre of a maritime republic. In fact Venice was the most important seaport in late medieval Europe. It was also Europe’s link with Asia. Environmentally, architecturally, and historically Venice is unique, and in its Republician days it was known as “La Serenissima” (the most serene).
