South Georgia is one of those magical places still left on earth, though it, too, is changing. There are concentrations of wildlife here that eloquently demonstrate the persistence of life in the face of great odds. Not all of this persistence is beneficial. When we killed off so many whales earlier in the last two centuries the natural balance of things was upset resulting in the southern fur seal now multiplying at such a rate to displace wandering albatross nesting sites, and probably impacting the return of healthy populations of whales by depleting more and more of the krill they both need.
