Crossroads between Mali and the Ivory Coast

Bobo-Dioulasso is the second biggest town in Burkina Faso. It is the capital of the region Hauts-Bassins and of the provice Houet. The name is a combination of the words Bobo, Dioula und Sô. Bobo the designation for the Ethnie, which lives manly in Bobo-Dioulasso. Dioula is a Mande-language, similar to Bambara and means in the lanuage of Dioula 'house'. Therefore means Bobo-Dioulasso 'the houses' or so, where the Bobo and the Dioula lives as well as 'the houses of the Bobo's which speaks Dioula.

Well worth to see is the 'Grand Marche', the old quarters and last but not least the big Mosque built in 1880 in the sudanese style.

Also by culture Bobo-Dioulasso provides highlights: Every two years there is the cultural festival 'Semaine Nationale de la Culture (SNC)'
