California is so big, the California Tourism board has to divide the state into different sections, but you can see the good stuff in these 4 areas: Northern Cal, Southern Cal, the Central Coast, the National Parks

Northern Cal: Best destination is San Francisco. The wineries of Napa Valley and the rocky Northern Coast are good places to visit. Out of the way destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Mt. Shasta and Bodega Bay are nice.

SoCal: L.A. is massive and hard to navigate, but has many cool places to visit: Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Westwood, West Hollywood, Manhattan Beach, Malibu and on and on. Do the movie studio tours and amusement parks, but just cruising around L.A. is more fun. San Diego is a scenic vacation spot. Visit my San Diego page for more info.

Central Coast: Camp out among the redwoods near Big Sur, or on the Russian River. Drive US 1. Visit Carmel, Monterrey, Santa Barbara.

National Parks: You have to visit Yosemite if you go to California. Get the touristy stuff out of the way first and see Yosemite Valley. Then try and get away from the crowds and take a backpacking adventure. Lake Merced is about half a day's hike from the valley. Or leave from Tuolumne Meadows and hike on the back side of the park.
