    Iolani Palace: Iolani Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Built in 1882, Iolani Palace was the official residence of King Kalakaua and Queen Liiokalani; Hawaii's last two monarchs. For 76 years after the overthrow of the monarchy, Iolani Palace was used as a government building and capital building during the Republic, the Territory and eventually Statehood years. In 1969,the palace was vacated and restoration of the building has been ongoing to this day. More than 10,000 artifacts of the monarchy period were sold at auction, about 4,000 artifacts have been recovered.
There is a 45 minute tour of the Palace, and there is an admission fee. I highly recommend the tour. You will be saddened and moved by the experience. Every thing about the Hawaiian people, its past, present and future is some how connected to this magnificent building.
