City that Cares about Culture

Where I Live

My building
I live in an area of the city called Fox Park. But I am just two doors from Compton Heights. The building I live in was built in 1895 around the time the famous Water Tower was built. It is a six unit fee-simple townhouse, and a historic building. My unit is the second from the right.

Why I Like Living in St. Louis

The main reason I moved to St. Louis was when I got my teaching position near here. But now I am retired, and if I didn't like it here, I could go anywhere. Why do I stay, besides my neat home and the fact that I have built important friendships and activities here? Because St. Louis is a bottomless source of great culture and affordable fun entertainment. In the summertime, we can go to free outdoor activities almost every day of the week: Compton Heights Band Concerts on Monday, free seats at the MUNY every night, jazz on Wednesday at the Whittaker Jazz Festival, trips to Ted Drewes for ice cream, picnics at the Arboretum or in Forest or Tower Grove Park. If you can walk a quarter of a mile, the Zoo is free, as is the Science Center. I support the Art Museum and Missouri Botanical Gardens with an affordable senior membership. AND I wouldn't be without my season tickets to The Repertory Theatre, Opera Theatre St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, and the St. Louis Symphony. (See my Things to Do link below for descriptions of some of these activities.)

Cons:"hot and dry in July and August, occasional power outages, Rt. 40 is a bummer"
In A Nutshell:"Cultural Oasis in the Middle of the Country"
