Lady Musgrave Island Travel Guide: 17 reviews and 45 photos

This is a stunning island off the coast of Central Queensland. We drove from Brisbane to 1770 stayed overnight here and then took the Spirit of 1770 to lady Musgrave. It is a small island - takes only 30 mins or so to walk the entire island and is surrounded by stunning coral reefs. We went camping for 8 days though it turned into 11 days due to a cyclone off the coast and the boat not being able to pick us up.

Tips for camping

Be prepared for a hike of approx. 800 meters across the island to the camping ground area. It usually takes several trips to transport all your gear across the island and this can be exhausting. Also be prepared for the birds. The island is home to 20,000+ mutton birds and everything will soon be covered in bird droppings including you! You MUST take the extra food that is suggested as we were stuck there for any extra 3 days and luckily had enough supplies.

General Tips

Do take a sea sickness tablet before getting on the boat - both ways were incredibly rough with many people sick.
Take lots of sunscreen.
Snorkelling is stunning and fishing was good.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Great reef and marine life; turtle laying in Dec was well worth seeing; peaceful with only 30 other people on the island
  • Cons:The birds - noise and droppings are a pain; there is nothing on the island so you need to take everything including emergency medicines
  • In a nutshell:Stunning island but you need to take everything for an enjoyable stay.
