Life's Greatest Experience: Egypt

Woooooohoooooo! I love Egypt! Or shall I say I love
Cairo? It is wonderful..and I am excited again. This
place is just amazing, and its bursting at its seems
with history. This may be as close to my intended Algerian North African experience as I come
so I'm soaking it all up. The old colonial buildings
are just beautiful....the Arabic signs, the men
smoking sheesha pipes on the sidewalk as they listen
to Arabic music, the tea sellers, the perfume shops,
the people gathered around the roasting lamb meat in
the front of small restaurants, the mosques on one
corner and the churches on another, and the 4000 year
old statues of Egytian pharoes smack dab in the middle
of the city.....oh and did I mention the Nile river & the Pyramids??? I'll be updating this page with photos soon...but first I must enjoy my travels...see you soon!

First Stop: Cairo

I arrived in Cairo, Egypt via a flight from Kuwait and I was instantly attracted to Cairo (believe it or not). I knew there was something magical about this city on the Nile River. I stayed on Mohamed Farid Street and soon found myself wandering the cities streets. fI followed the sweet scents that flowed from the various Ahwas scattered about on each major corner. There is more to this place than those impressive pyramids at Giza & I was determined to experience it all.

My tribute to the wonders of Egypt

The time I spent in Egypt left such a warm & positive feeling in me I had to honor my admiration for the country. When my son was born in 2003 I named him McKinley Nile....his middle name being the name of the life & blood of Egypt...the mighty Nile River. I spent several days sailing down the Nile on a Nubian Felucca from Aswan to Edfu & it was on this journey I realized how blessed my life has been.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:History & an truly an amazing adventure awaits you. Did I mention the history??
  • Cons:Baksheesh police, spitting camels, & guys who ride spitting camels!
  • In a nutshell:If you die before seeing Egypt you really missed out!

Well done! I love the humour in your tips. The tip about the lines given to tourists in Egypt is dead on. I'm glad my Dad wasn't there when I went to Egypt or he would have traded me in for a herd of camels in a jiffy - LOL.

With the help of VT'ers like yourself, my interest in my place of birth has been piqued again. Hopefully the not so distant future will find me on the Nile once more. Enjoyed your narratives and pix James!

Great tips James! I have been to Egypt twice but never been to Cairo or sailed down the Nile on a felucca. I do have to go there a third time.
