June 2, 2001: This is my 3rd visit to Saigon and each time I come back there is something new about the city. When I first came here in 1998 there were no malls, no shopping plazas, no fast food joints (the one exception being Lotteria near the Rex Hotel), and there weren't many real estate developments.....well all of that has changed. Now you can shop in multi-level, airconditioned shopping malls, eat Kentucky Fried Chicken, bowl the night away, bank at foreign banks, sip cafe mochas, eat a scoop of 31 Flavors, grocery shop at the local super market, and even catch one of Hollywood's latest flicks at the cinema. Saigon is on the rise again. Today I rented a motorbike and headed out to Hoc Mon district to visit some family friends (pictured above). I'm getting pretty good at negotiating the Saigon traffic on my 110 cc moto. The traffic doesn't seem nearly as chaotic to me as it did the first time I came to this city. I guess I am just getting used to it. |
