Matthew's street & Concert Square

These are the main areas in Liverpool for the nightlife. I've been to both areas a few times, my personal favourite area being Matthew's Street.

You can just jump into a taxi and ask the driver to take you to either of these places from anywhere in Liverpool and they'll know where you mean. Obviously the taxi fares will differ as to how far out of the city centre you are staying. There are great hotels in the city centre which you can get good deals at if you book early, for example, The Aldelphi. If you do stay in the centre, you can easily walk to either of these areas.

Both of these areas are full of bars and clubs. A lot have different themes i.e. Reflex in Concert Sqaure is 80s themed and therefore plays 80s music with a huge dancefloor which changes colour!
There are also place like Wetherspoons and Lloyds Bar's for cheap drinks and deals on drinks. You'll come across the odd pub or ten which are great for a sit-down drink and chat.
Every bar, pub or club are next to each other in each area, so walking in high heels is not an issue!

Most if not all of the clubs have a charge to get in after a certain time - usually after 10, 11 and Midnight. The later you go into a clube, the dearer it is. I think the highest price I've paid is £4.

You will find a place or places to suit all in Liverpool, and as far as the amount you spend on a night out, it's less than average.

Flares, Matthew's Street

Now, what to say about Flares . . . . apart from I LOVE THIS CLUB!

It is the BEST nightclub if you enjoy 60s, 70s & 80s music as I do!
It's so much fun! They sell afro wigs, glitter microphones, huge glasses and inflatable guitars and stick-on moustaches, all for a few £s behind the bar. I sing and dance the night away every time I go!

The drinks are reasonably priced and the staff try to serve you as quickly as possible. There are friendly bouncers on the doors and these are the people you need to see to get your hand stamped which will allow you to re-enter if you go out for a smoke.
The toilets get in a worse state as the night runs into the morning, but hey, you get that anywhere where a lot of people are.

Everybody who is in this club is out for a good time. In all of the occasions I've been to any Flares club, I've never seen any fights break out or even any arguments where you feel uncomfortable.

The Cavern, Matthew's Street

The club is famous for launching The Beatles. They played here in the early days. The club has so much history and all over the walls people write their names and the year they were there. You'll be lucky to find a stop to put your own mark.

The bar prices are reasonable but some times the ques can be quite large.

This club/bar is down stairs and there are no windows. There is no disabled access to my knowledge and it can get very hot as it's very popular.

The Cavern is definitely worth a visit, great atmosphere!

The club has live music on consisting of local talents and and those from a little further afield.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Can go out on a budget, great clubs, bars and pubs - something for everybody!
  • Cons:Taxi's home can be hard to come by if you leave when the clubs close - get on the main roads and flag on down
  • In a nutshell:Fantastic, fun night out.

Some good Liverpool tips Hayley, especially the hotel ones. The Days Inn hotel sounds ideal for a night out on the tiles. I will have to stay overnight next time I'm in Liverpool and make the most of the nightlife!

Lovely little page about Liverpool here. The city is still on my must visit list ...hopefully when my team Borussia Mönchengladbach plays there some day in the future. Interesting to see that the Hotel is named Aachen, which is actually the name of a German town.
