The Rio Sonora Route

The Ruta Rio Sonora runs from Cananea to Ures, Sonora through several small pueblos including the beautiful little town of Banamichi. We first discovered this magical place 6 years ago while riding our motorcycles and fell in love with the area.

This is off the beaten path, far from commercial tourist areas where you will find lots of things to see and do. The hot springs and warm springs are very popular among the local Mexicans and travelers alike. You can visit a Mexican cattle ranch, a bacanora distillery, tour centuries old churches built in the 1600's, ride horses along the river, hunt deer and dove, and enjoy the local Sonoran cuisine.

People come to this area to relax and commune with nature. Birding is excellent here.

The pace of life is slow and you will experience the real old Mexico.

Banamichi, Mexico

Banamichi is one of several small pueblos located along the Ruta Rio Sonora. It's name comes from the Opata language meaning, where it gives to return the water.

Founded in 1639, Banamichi is home to a growing movement to revive and restore the original Colonial Adobe buildings in town. The beautiful temple of Nuestro Senora de Loreto faces the central plaza. A large petroglyph carved by the Opata Indians is held aloft by statues of Opata warriors in the town park. Banamichi brings to mind a feeling of colonial times.

Each year several fiestas are celebrated here including the Dia de Revalucion and Dia de Independencia.

There are several comfortable hotels and guest houses to accommodate travelers. The residents are extremely friendly and helpful and many speak English. Everyone seems to have a green thumb and the residents take a great deal of pride in their gardens and fruit trees.

Don't believe everything you hear in the news about the violence in Mexico. This part of Sonora is very safe. We have lived here for several years and have never witnessed any violence of any kind.

Banamichi is just 4 hours from the beach and 2 1/2 hours from Hermosillo the capitol of Sonora.
