Rauma is one of the six medieval towns in Finland and a good place for a day trip.
It is known for three historic features: picturesque Old Rauma, its lace and a distinctive own language *rauman murre*(actually a dialect, but maybe Rauma citizens just want to express their supremacy over the neighbouring town Pori...).
I like to visit this tiny west coast town during the summer when I happen to be around, walk in the narrow streets, have a cup of fresh coffee near the market place and drive back to Turku for the night.
So, park the car close to Tourist Information center and have a walk in Old Rauma in order to get closer to old maritime tradition and have a possibility to buy some pieces of handicraft art! |
| | Rauma houses
After crossing *Rauman Ganal* (have the boats really come up here?), stroll between the wooden Rauma houses painted in different pastel colours.
The oldest of these houses, nearly 600 of them date from 17th century. |
Rauma is the best and biggest example of wooden building tradition in Northern Europe and are part of the world's heritage protected by UNESCO since 1991. | | |
