Its a more or less one hour drive by car from Taormina on the A18 motorway with lots of tunels. The city itself was a bit of a disapointment after the picturesque Taormina except for those few sights and the harbour. From there you have access to Eoli islands, did not go this time and of course mainland. Messina has often been associated with its disasters. The bubonic plague was brought to Europe on a ship that arrived in Messina, and several earthquakes have destroyed parts of the city over the centuries. The most destructive was that of 1908. It also got its nickname "The City of Ghosts" when the Allied bombardment Messina in 1943!
