I was in Germany in the summer of 1989 playing soccer with a club team from San Diego. Going into the trip, we looked at it as a chance to redeem ourselves from the butt-kickings we endured the previous summer from some German teams that we hosted in California. Fortunately, we had assembled a pretty good team and we played well. However, as I look back at it today, I don't remember the scores of the games. Instead, I remember the beauty of Bavaria, the age of the architecture and staring at the Berlin wall only a few weeks before it came tumbling down.
And of course, I remember Hamburg.
Here are some of my recollections . . .
