Welcome to the home of Starbucks. Yes, this is the city to blame for all of those old-fashioned, Mom and Pop coffee shops going out of business because another Starbucks has moved in. It seems like there are more Starbucks than McDonald's, doesn't it? Actually, I'm a big fan of good coffee and Starbucks has ensured that you're never too far away from a piping hot cup of fresh roasted caffeine. Microsoft and Nordstrom are also headquartered here, and of course, there's the world famous Boeing airplane manufacturer. Seattle's business prowess is exceeded only by its physical beauty. It is situated on the sparkling waters of the Puget Sound and is surrounded by magnificent snowcapped mountains, including the spectacular Mt. Rainier which is clearly visible from downtown though it looms some 80 miles in the distance. The only downfall (pardon the pun) of Seattle, is the rainy weather, however much of this wet reputation is myth. While there are quite a few gray days, New York and Atlanta get more rain annually than Seattle. Even my own hometown, Charlotte has more annual rainfall. The difference is that Seattle's rain is light and more frequent, while in Charlotte, when it rains, IT POURS!
My parents lived here for less than a year in the early 90s and I loved visiting. |
