"Richmond: Virginia's historic capital city" Richmond by acemj

Richmond is only a four hour drive (well, that's going about 90 miles per hour most of the way) from Charlotte, and yet until this trip I had never stopped for more than a few minutes. Then, VT introduced me to "Mr. Richmond" himself, Nat Atkins, also known as b1bob. Nat invited me to his hometown and gave me a great tour of the place as only he can.
I found Richmond to be a great surprise. Its location on the James River and the sloping, hilly nature of its geography make it a very appealing destination. For a Civil War buff, Richmond is an essential stop with its museums, historic buildings and monuments from that era in U.S. history.
- Pros:Incredible concentration of Civil War history
- Cons:Downtown needs some revitilization
- In a nutshell:A welcoming southern city that remembers its roots

Re your picture "Capitol Square: Hidden Dome": That's NOT the Capitol. It's the Rotunda of The Jefferson Hotel. That's the Edward Valentine statue of TJ, famous for losing it's head in the 1901 fire. Can't believe no one has corrected this before.
I've been to Richmond 10+ times in the past few years but I've never actually gone there for travel... should get around to seeing the city someday, though I might want to avoid Nat's parking...
Hi Mark. Nice page on Richmond. As one who is very much absorbed into the saga of the American Civil War, I will surly get here one day.
Wonderful page Mark, so full of great places to see. Would love to visit the White House of Confederacy, and all these other historical places. Superb.
Enjoyed your interesting page on Richmond.
Your warning and danger tip is just plain wrong! The Atkins' household is courteous to a fault even to those of us who have leftist leanings :-)
Saw you featured and decided that it'd been too long since I visited your pages. Great Richmond stuff. Civil War?? War Between the States?? I thought it was the "War of Northern Aggression". :)
You speedster you :-)) Thats quite an amazing hidden dome. Wonderful history great coverage on the capitol too. An 'inspired to visit' great page.
Greek pizza, greek columnes, "Mr Richmond", all these look familiar to me...
Mr. Richmond indeed. I just may have to come visit, but you should have eaten at the brewpub!
