Transportation: Take the subway!

Getting TO/AROUND: The subway is the most economically way of getting around NYC (other than walking or stealing a car). The fare for a single pass is $2. A day pass is $7 and seven day pass costs $21. For more information and maps, check out the website link below.

    Transportation: Sightseeing bus

Getting TO/AROUND: Well, I've never done this (not my style), but my friend Elizabeth who works in NYC took this tour with her coworkers and told me it's pretty fun especially if the weather's cooperative. It's also a great alternative if your feet are tired (after all, this city is huge!!). Go to the website below for all the options (just click on the option to get the details).

Getting TO/AROUND: Public buses are also a good alternative to the high cost of taxis. Check out the website for all you need to know.

    Taxis: Taxis
  • Tip Rating:

    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: Well, you have to ride a cab in NYC. It's a tradition. The fare starts at $2 and goes up from there. From Laguardia, you're looking at about $15-$25 to Manhattan depending on where exactly you're going. It's more like $35 from JFK and more from Newark. Try to share a cab to reduce the cost.

When you're on the street trying to hail a cab, look at the lights on the top. If the cab's number is lighted, then it's available. The lights on the side of the number are not the ones you're looking for- it's the cab number itself. Just stick your hand out and the driver will usually stop for you if he's available.

Tips are not mandatory, but the standard is 15-20 percent. Also, try to avoid tolls (take the 59th Street bridge to Laguardia, for example) because you'll be paying for them.

Grand Central Terminal: Grand Central Terminal
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: I've always called it "Grand Central Station," but technically it's a terminal because trains both originate and terminate here. The Metro North Railroad operates from here and trains connect NYC to the northern suburbs and Connecticut.

You can also catch the subway from here.
