This is your captain speaking . . .

I've been to Buffalo a couple times, but both times were very short trips. My latest trip, however, gave me a great new perspective of the city. My buddy is a pilot and he took me up in a 4-seater to get an overview of the city and Niagara Falls. He even let me take control of the plane once we were safely up in the air (as you can see in the picture above)! We took off from Dunkirk Airfield (about a 50 minute drive southwest of Buffalo) and flew up the coastline of Lake Erie, past downtown and around the falls.

Buffalo has a reputation for being too cold, too snowy and somewhat depressed economically. And to a large degree this is true. The big tech firms that have stimulated many American cities' economies have yet to come to Buffalo. From the sky, however, it's clear that Buffalo has potential. Granted, we were flying on a hot July day, which is certainly not the norm, but the physical setting of the city is actually quite impressive. The lakeside location and the meandering Niagara River are beautiful from above. There are many impressive churches in the city and the sports scene is quite good with the NFL's Buffalo Bills and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres. This city has some of the best fans in the country. You'll also find excellent restaurants in Buffalo. While the city is best known for its chicken wings, you'll also find great Italian and Polish cuisine.
