"The New & Improved Matthews, North Carolina" Matthews by acemj

Okay, I know the locals won't like me saying this, but Matthews is really a part of greater Charlotte, North Carolina. I lived in Matthews back in 1993, but I always considered it a suburb of the big city.

But make no mistake, this is not your typical American suburb. Matthews has a wonderful neighborhood spirit. Its citizens are loyal and active in the community. You're likely to run into your neighbors at the grocery store where the clerk will know your name.

I've entitled this page "The New & Improved Matthews, North Carolina" because of the recent expansion to the historic downtown. A Town Hall and Library were recently added as well as a number of shops and a Community Center. All of this has added to the charm of Matthews while at the same time giving people more to do in town.

There are approximately 22,000 residents of Matthews and it is a fairly affluent area. Its history dates back to the 1800s when it was primarily a farming community. In fact, it was originally called Stumptown because the farmers cleared out so many trees in order to farm which resulted in an abundance of exposed tree stumps!

The Community Center is "brand new" but it is actually 80 years old and has quite a history. It was almost torn down for condos or apartments about 10 years ago. I hope that all is going well with you.
