Boston Transportation

T / subway: The "T"

Getting TO/AROUND: Some call it a metro and others call it a subway, but in Boston it's simply called the 'T'.
It's clean, safe and cheap, so hop on board.
The lines are color-coded either red, green, blue or yellow and tokens are a dollar each way for any distance with a few rare exceptions to more distant stops. You can also purchase Visitor Passports that allow you unlimited travel for a designated time period.

The fare is a reasonble $1.25 which includes free transfers. There are machines at most stops and the attendants will make change for you if you have larger bills.

I took the T back from Cambridge to the airport on my September '05 trip and it only took about 20 minutes to go from the Kendall Square stop in Cambridge to the airport (switching at the Gray Line) and still only $1.25!

Getting TO/AROUND: Okay, this is more of an activity than a transportation tip, but if you go to the Public Garden next to Boston Common, you'll see a pond in which you can take a ride on a pedal-powered swan boat. The kids will love this activity. The swan boat company is a Boston tradition and has been operating since 1877.

Getting TO/AROUND: My buddy suggested that to get a good overview of Boston's layout and sights, we should go on a Duck Tour. Unfortunately, it was sold out for the next two days, so if you want to go, call ahead or go to their web site and book a reservation. You can get tickets in person at the Prudential Center (off Boyston). The tour lasts 80 minutes and is conducted in old World War II amphibious vehicles, so you'll not only drive down the streets, but you'll also cruise down the Charles River.
