Thanksgiving in Jacksonville!

by acemj - last update: Oct 17, 2002

This trip was one of those last-minute, spur of the minute type of things. My best friend invited me down to spend Thanksgiving with his mom and brother in Jax!
It took about 6 hours to drive down from Charlotte, but we were welcomed with lots of great home cooking! Although, I'm still trying to get used to Thanksgiving in the South (i.e. without any snow outside), it was nice to sit out on the patio in the evening with the temperature in the mid-sixties!

My buddy and I drove downtown the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving day and couldn't find anything to do! It was pretty much a ghost town. We drove around looking at the bridges and the buildings (the setting is really picturesque) and then ended up walking around Jacksonville Landing trying to imagine what it would be like with lots of people around.

After that, we drove down to the beach, which only takes about 20 minutes from downtown, and found a few small bars open at Jacksonville Beach. Despite the lack of excitement, it was nice to simply be near the ocean and smell the salted air.

The day after Thanksgiving, we drove around a little and found some nice neighborhoods with some huge homes, but my initial impression was really that Jacksonville is full of your typical scenes from that mundane world of American suburbia.

When is your next trip to Texas?

St. Augustine (off the beaten path) is a place I really rant to see. I think Jacksonville is fine but a little too modern for my taste.

I've been all over the great state of Florida, but never set eyes on Jacksonville. At least I now have a sense of it--big buildings, big homes, too much suburbia.
