San Francisco Transportation

Cable Cars: Cable Cars
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: This is the best way to overcome the steep hills in this city and of course, the most romantic and well, clichéd. The cable cars run from 6:30am to 12:30am 7 days a week and cost $2 per ride (one way). For more info, go to www.sfmuni.com ('MUNI' stands for the municipal railway).

    By Air: Airport (SFO)
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: The San Francisco International Airport is a modern and efficient facility with information booths in each terminal's baggage claim area and easy connections to downtown. The best way to get there in my opinion is on the train (BART). The BART station is located on the Departures/Ticketing Level (Level 3) of the International Terminal and a ticket into town will only set you back $4.95 compared to around $30 for a taxi or a minimum of $12 for a shuttle bus.

    SF MUNI: Environmentally friendly buses
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: The buses are also run by MUNI and most are environmentally friendly, running on cables. MUNI also operated the cable cars, trolleys, trains and streetcars. A standard one way fare on the bus is $1.25 for buses (keep in mind it's $2 for cable cars), however, your best bet is probably to purchase a 1 day ($9), 3 day ($15) or 7 day ($20) Passport, which is good for all public transportation and alleviates the need to worry about having exact change or to remember to buy the appropriate token. You can buy these at most grocery stores or convenience stores.

    Hired Transport: Taxi
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis are fairly plentiful in the downtown area, but not as much as in New York or a city like Buenos Aires (they were EVERYWERE there!). If you need a cab, try hailing one down and if you don't have any luck, head to the nearest major hotel and they're likely to be lined up. The fare is metered and starts at $1.70. It moves pretty quickly, so this isn't necessarily your best option. We rode a cab one night because we had something like 10 minutes to meet some friends across town and it was really the only way to be on time.

Map of Area: Good map for tourists
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: This map will give you a broad perspective of the various downtown neighborhoods, but you can pick up a free one at most downtown hotels or at the tourist information booths at the airport.

great shot, I shall try it when we get there. That's if I can get my wife to walk some of the hills. Beers and cheers from England.
