San Francisco Hotel Tips by acemj

I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting San Francisco and not only because it was featured in Alfred Hitchcock's classic suspense film "Vertigo" and not because it has a Cabaret bar downstairs that was a famous speakeasy during Prohibition.

Unique Qualities: The beds were comfortable and the room was simple and clean. There was a nice walk-in closet, a coffemaker and contrary to what my Rough Guide said, the staff was extremely friendly. In fact, I told the guys at the front desk that I was expecting them to be jerks because the Rough Guide described the staff as a bit snooty. They just laughed and explained the the ownership had changed in the last six months and that the staff was all new.

Well, I probably wouldn't stay here again, but it wasn't all that bad. It's just that the neighborhood is a bit gritty, with the occasional transvestite streetwalker on nearby corners and an adult book store directly across the street. During the day, however, it's perfectly safe and there is a bus line a block up on Van Ness.

Unique Qualities: The room was nice despite the view out the front window onto busy Geary Street and the adult book store. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was good with some serious water pressure in the shower. It's a seven block walk straight up Geary to Union Square.

Ritz-Carlton. Okay, I've never stayed here, but it's good to know that they have a Ritz! The San Francisco version of this excellent hotel, is housed in a former insurance company's headquarters.
