Right across the lawn and a small street from the Alte Pinakothek, is the Neue Pinakothek, the more modern museum that houses an impressive collection of 18th and 19th century European art. The museum, which was also founded by King Ludwig I, picks up where the Alte leaves off (the Old Picture Gallery) containing art from the 14th through the 18th centuries). The museum features art of various styles from the classicism of the 18th c. to art nouveau of the 19th.
It's open daily except Tuesdays, 10 am to 5 pm and on Wednesdays, 10 am to 8 pm.

Just next to Konigsplatz is Karolinenplatz. Its original design by Karl von Fisher (built from 1809-1812) was intended to resemble the Place de l'Etoile in Paris, however the space has been altered since World War II with buildings that do nothing to help enhance the harmony of the original design. Most noticeably, in the center of the square, you'll find an obelish by Leo Von Klenze, which commemorates the 30,000 or more Bavarian soldiers who were in the Russian campaign of 1812.
There are three remaining city gates in Munich all of which were once ramparts in the old city walls. In addition to Karl's Gate and the Isar Gate, there is the Sendlinger Gate, which dates to the early 14th century. Originally, there was a central tower, but that was destroyed in 1808
Directions: Sendlinger Tor (U-Bahn, U3, U6, U1, U2).
St.Ludwig's was built between 1829 and 1844 by Friedrich Gärtner (whom I discovered is responsible for many of the city's buildings). It acted as the parish church for the area as well as the university's church and was built at the request of King Ludwig. Like so many of Munich's buildings, it was heavily damaged during the war and renovations took until 1958 to complete. The church's style is New Roman Byzantine and inside you'll find some enormous frescoes that are quite beautiful.

Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich is located off of Ludwigstrasse. In most cities, the area around a university is good for nightlife (if you're young), and Munich is no different. The main building is at Geschwister Scholl Platz near U-Bahn station "Universitaet" (U3/U6).

It seems like many of world's great city's have a Victory or Triumphal Arch of some kind and Munich is no different. This one is located on Ludwigstrasse by the university and marks the entrance to one of the city's hottest areas for good nightlife. The arch was built from 1843-52 based on designs by Friedrich von Gärtner and modelled after the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Originally, it was built as a tribute to teh Bavarian army's success in the Napoleanic war, but after being damaged in WWII, it was inscribed with the following words: "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war and a reminder to us all".
If you walk down toward the Isar River from Marienplatz, you'll run into the Isartor Gate, which was built in 1337 as part of King Ludwig of Bavaria's medieval fortifications. It went through restorations by Friedrich von Gartner between 1833 and 1835 and again after damages sustained during World War II. In 1958 the ruin was donated to the Karl-Valentin Foundation, which then created a memorial to its namesake who was a famous comedian and folk singer. The facade of the Isartor is graced by a facade painted in 1835 depicting the Battle fought by King Ludwig of Bavaria in 1322 at Ampfing.

Propyläen in Königsplatz
At the top of Königsplatz is the the Doric columned Propyläen, a monument built to King Ludwig I and which now stages the occasional rock concert. Interestingly, this square was once a major staging ground for Hitler to flaunt his military parades. For me, it was a good landmark to meet up with Richie and Doreen and a good place to seek shelter from a quick burst of rain that is seemingly very common in Munich. Flanking one side of the Propyläen, is the Glyptothek a museum housing King Ludwig's collection of statuary and ancient artifacts. Opposite the museum is the Staatliche Antikensammlungen ( State Antiquities Collection), although I didn't have time to go to visit either one.

The Deutsches Museum is a huge museum all about German contributions to science and technology and boy, are there ever a lot!! The collection is very impressive and contains items such as the first Benz automobile from 1886 and the laboratory bench at which the atom was first split in 1938. For all you science buffs out there, this is a must see!
Admission: 7.5 Euros/adults, students under 30 and kids 6-15 are 3 Euros, kids under 6 are free
Address: Museumsinsel 1
Directions: It's technically on an island in the Isar River (from Marienplatz head in the direction of the Altes Rathaus and you'll be going toward the river).

St. Michael's is a giant Renaissance church located near Marienplatz on the main shopping street that leads up toward Karlsplatz. In fact, it's the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The barrel-vaulted roof is the world's second largest after only St. Peter's in Vatican City. The Royal Vault is probably the biggest draw here for the visitor as it contains the remains of King Ludwig II as well as many members of the Wittelsbach royal family.
