When I set my eyes on visiting South America, I took out my map and began to dream. I grabbed a cup of coffee and set the map out on the table in front of me. I realized that I was looking at the continent that contains the incredible ruins of Machu Picchu, the world's tallest waterfall (Angel Falls in Venezuela), the jagged mountain peaks of Patagonia and the tango clubs of Buenos Aires. But staring back at me was Brazil. It dominated the map, taking up almost half the land area that I was looking at and I realized that no other place could offer so much.
And though I wasn't able to see as much as I would have liked, my introduction to Brazil was thrilling, exhausting, majestic and inspiring. As I was on the plane returning home, I remembered hang gliding over Rio, dining on African-spiced foods in Salvador and feeling the spray from the most beautiful waterfalls I've ever seen and I knew that I had made the right choice.
