Things To Do: Stroll Monte Cassino

  • The main street in Sopot is ul Bohaterow Monte Cassino (or Heroes of the Monte Cassino) and this is where most people will spend their time when visiting Sopot. Along this completely pedestrianized thoroughfare, you'll find shops, cafes, restaurants and abundant opportunities for people watching. It leads to Plac Zdrojowy near the end and ultimately to the Molo, the long wooden pier leading into the Gulf of Gdansk in the Baltic Sea.

  • When you're walking on Monte Cassino heading east toward the water, you'll pass through this pleasant square filled with outdoor cafes, flowers, fountains and plenty of places to grab a "lody" (ice cream). There is a sculpture of a fisherman here that is a reminder of Sopot's past as a small fishing village. Take a few minutes to enjoy the atmosphere before heading down to the waterfront.

Just past this on your right hand side you'll see the building seen in my second picture. The tall tower is a lighthouse, but I don't know much else about it. The cross-street here is Grunwaldzka, which runs parallel to the beach. There's a smaller path even closer to the water that's a popular place for a stroll along the waterfront.

  • Near the upper end (I'm calling the end away from the water "upper"), you'll see this church that was built between 1899 and 1901. I went inside and was impressed with the architecture. There is a small square in front of the church (and in front of the Hotel Rezydent) with some benches that makes a nice spot to relax and do some people watching.

  • The Centrum Rezydent shopping center about halfway down Monte Cassino is a pretty funky building from the outside. The building's skin looked warped and funky, but inside you'll find a normal little shopping mall with some shops and restaurants. The weather was too nice outside for me to spend much time indoors, but on a bad weather day, this would be an ideal escape.

  • Europe's largest wooden pier, the Molo stretches over 500 meters into the Gulf of Gdansk. This is a great place for views of the beach and on a clear day, you can see the Westerplatte region of Gdansk. There were a lot of people basking in the sun the day I was there and in the summertime, it gets even busier with events and exhibitions taking place here all the time.

Sopot looks like quite an interesting little spot, especially if you could fully enjoy the Baltic shore in Summer weather! I was also impressed by that fancy lighthouse and the weirdly shaped shopping mall !!
