North Carolina

North Carolina really is a beautiful state. It's just a more subtle kind of beauty. The Atlantic shore is not as dramatically rocky as that of California's coastline and the mountains aren't as high and jagged as those in Colorado. But North Carolina is beautiful in a quiet, less brash sort of way. The people are among the most hospitable you'll meet anywhere and the state is full of great universities, charming small towns and some interesting historical sites.

I've lived in North Carolina since 1993, which means that I've lived here longer than anywhere else in my life. I still haven't quite figured out what I really consider my hometown (probably Minneapolis since I was born there and still have family there), but North Carolina is definitely becoming comfortable (uh-oh, better get movin'). I still haven't seen ALL of this beautiful state but I do have a number of pages here on VT and this page is just meant to give you a preview of what the state has to offer. For more details, check out my other North Carolina pages.

There are many beautiful parts of North Carolina, but the best places are on its edges. The western side of the state is covered with some of the oldest mountains on earth. The Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains are filled with beautiful parks, hiking trails, waterfalls and vantage points and are well worth some exploration. The coast is one of the most interesting in the USA, from the Outer Banks in the north to the Cape Fear region near Wilmington in the south, there are many quaint towns and quiet beaches to enjoy here.

Thanks for the great info. It's been a long time since I've been to NC and I want to get as much info as possible before we make the big move.

Hi Mark...just checking out NC.I got 2 offers this week that might move me there if I don't go to MD. I'm so indecisive. Your tips are great, of course. Did you ever get out to Cape Lookout? I saw the pic you have from the web & was curious.
