My buddy Pav and I stopped briefly in Leiria (pronounce, "lay-ree-uh") on our way from Coimbra down to the cathedral in Batalha. Many people use this town as a resting place to visit some of the area's many attractions. This region of Portugal (known as the Estremadura) includes the pilgrim's paradise, Fatima, the amazing monastery in Alcobaça, Batalha's spectacular cathedral and many other sights.
The Medieval old quarter is a fascinating web of cobbled lanes, full of shops and azulejo covered walls, but the dominant highlight of Leiria is the castle the sits on the hillside above town. |

Bwana_Brown Tue Jun 1, 2004 10:59 UTC So, it was you who put all the scratches on my car! We had exactly the same vehicle on our recent 1600 mile trip around the country. We had planned for a night in Leiria but had to make some changes. Still, we saw the castle on the peak as we drove by! | dabuwan Wed Nov 26, 2003 18:20 UTC Interesting medieval town I didn't know. Great page! | coceng Fri Nov 14, 2003 04:31 UTC Some impressive sights here by you ! :) Regards. | ncfg Mon Nov 10, 2003 18:11 UTC I know Leiria just passing through as well, nice job. |
