Funicular - San Lorenzo de El Escorial

The funicular at the Valley of the Fallen takes you to the top of the mountain and the base of the 500 foot cross that tops the basilica, but on the day we visited, it wasn't operating (perhaps because of the snow?). We never really got a good look at the cross, so I guess I'll have to return some day!!

When coming from Madrid you can leave from either of the two main train stations. We left from Atocha. Just look for the trains marked "cercancias" and you'll be on the right track (pun intended- :-) ).
When you arrive at the train station at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, just purchase a ticket on the bus that will pick you up outside and take you into town (it's about .95 Euros). From the bus station you can walk to the monastery in less than 5 minutes. Combined tickets for the bus ride and the admission to the Valley of the Fallen can be purchased at the bus station in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
