This was originally built as a tomb for the Emperor Hadrian (76-138 AD), but by the 6th century it was turned into a fortress. The upper terrace is where Puccini's heroine in Tosca threw herself from with the famous cry 'Scarpia, avanti a Dio' (Scarpia, we meet before God).

Probably the prettiest bridge in Rome, the Sant'Angelo Bridge leads directly to the front of Castel Sant'Angelo. The angels lining the bridge are by Bernini.

One of Michelangelo's most famous works is in a smallish church in an unexpectedly tucked away alley. I was staying in a hostel just a couple blocks from San Pietro in Vincoli and had already been in Rome for a few days when one of my hostel mates said, 'hey, have you seen the Michelangelo in the church up the hill?' I think the buildings right next to it are part of a university.

Statue in the Capitoline Museums of the mythical brothers, Romulus and Remus. The twin sons of Mars and the Vestal Sylvia were supposedly set adrift in a basket on the River Tiber and later found and suckled by a she-wolf. Romulus went on to kill his brother and found Rome.

Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II I was traveling with a friend of mine who had some difficulty remembering the names of all the monuments in Rome, so she began to give them nicknames. This monument became the 'White House,' simply because of its grandiose stature and obviously, its brilliant white stone. It is breathtaking at night perched high on a hill and is surely one of the better landmarks for a lost tourist to reorient himself when lost. It was actually built in the 19th century to honor Italy's first king, Vittorio Emanuele II. It also houses The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame and from the top you'll have one of the best views in the city.

The Column of Trajan (dates to 113 AD) originally was topped with a statue of its namesake, but this was replaced by a statue of St. Peter during the Renaissance. Trajan's ashes are buried in its base of the 65 foot obelisk. The spiral relief sculptures that circle all the way to the top beautifully depict the military career of the emperor.

If you walk from the train station to your lodging, you'll probably come across this magnificent church as I did. I didn't go inside until a few days later on a Sunday morning during Mass. Surprisingly, it became my favorite church in Rome! It was built on the hill where a 3rd century pope witnessed a sudden and miraculous snowfall in the middle of the summer. The ceiling will leave you speechless and is said to be gilded with the first gold brought from the New World.

We had a great meal here at one of the outdoor cafes being served too many courses by a Brazilian waiter. One thing I love about Italian restaurants is that you never feel rushed to leave. You're expected to linger over your meal and enjoy the atmosphere. And Piazza Navone provides a lot of atmosphere! This 17th century piazza is a great gathering place for locals and tourist alike. The centerpiece is Bernini's wonderful Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers), with statues representing the four corners of the world. The church behind the fountain is Sant'Agnese in Agone, a gorgeous Baroque masterpiece.

Just another shot of the piazza. It's also a great area at night with lots of popular pubs and hangouts.

I don't know much about the markets except that I walked by them every day, they appear to be very well preserved and they once were the markets of ancient Rome.
