I was not in Rome at any time during the 700 or so years before Christ walked the earth. I was not there during the period in which gladiators battled most often to their deaths in the famous Colosseum. I was not there during the Renaissance to witness the greatest artists of their time hard at work beautifying the city with some of the world's most well-known art. In fact, I never even visited Rome during the 20th century.
However, in February of 2002 I made my first trip to Rome. I came away feeling energized by the pace of this bustling, 21st century city and in a real sense, I felt as if I was able to glimpse not only modern life, but all of its glorious history.
There are few places on earth that give you a conscious feeling that you just might be walking in the center of the universe. I sometimes feel that way in New York- as if the whole world is watching- and there's no doubt it's a good feeling. I felt the same way in Rome.
I took the picture above standing in Bernini's famous colonnade of St. Peter's Square. |
