  • Named 'bridge of sighs' after the laments of the prisoners who were sentenced in the Doge's Palace and then sent sighing across this bridge into the 'new' prisons in the adjacent building. The new prisons were given that name because they were built for the overspill of prisoners from the 'old' prisons contained within the walls of the Doge's Palace.

  • There are only 3 bridges that span the Grand Canal. Let's take a look at them starting with Ponte degli Scalzi on the northern end of the canal by the train station and moving toward the famous Ponte di Rialto and then finally the Ponte dell'Accademia on the southern end.

  • Ponte di Rialto, the most well-known bridge of Venice.
The Rialto was designed by Antonio da Ponte in the late 16th century. It's location at the middle point of the Grand Canal gives you a great view of the sweeping curve of the waterway. Bellisima!
It's also a great gathering place where you'll find lots of tourists, merchants and locals alike.

  • Ponte dell'Accademia, a great wooden bridge that provides some of the best photo ops in the city looking down the Grand Canal toward San Marco (see my opening intro photo for the view).

  • Gallerie dell'Accademia (sorry about the dark photo- it was getting late when I snapped this shot).
The greatest collection of Venetian art in the world.
If you're a fan of artists like Titian, Carpaccio, Tintoretto, Veronese and Tiepolo then you must visit this museum.

  • The Mercato del Pesce (Fish Market) is a very busy market that has everything that swims in the Venetian waters. When I visited, it was a little late in the day and most of the good stuff was gone. The fishy smells, however, lingered on!

  • What a marvelous fusion of East and West! St. Mark's is the heart and soul of Venice and has been since its original consecration in AD 832. It burned down a century later, but was rebuilt in the 11th century. At the time, Venice recognized Byzantium as the world's cultural mecca and as a result, the architecture of the basilica reflects a decidedly eastern model.
The interior is simply breathtaking, adorned by art by greats like Tintoretto and Titian. Gold seemingly glitters at every turn and the church is laid out in the shape of a Greek cross and topped by five beautiful domes.

  • The five glorious domes of San Marco. I took from the freezing heights of the campanile. The wind was so strong that the wind chill was bitter cold, but the overcast skies resulting in interesting black and white photos.

  • A tower stood here for 1000 years, but then it mysteriously fell in 1912. Fortunately, the Venetians rebuilt their tower according to the original tower's plan. The views from the top are priceless (even if it's freezing up there in the winter).

  • As you can see from this picture, St. Mark's Square isn't actually square. It fans out and widens at the end closest to the church which creates the illusion that the space is larger than it really is. The buildings surrounding the square include the Museo Correr and the Biblioteca Nazionale Sansoviniana, but what you'll probably remember most about the square is the pigeons! Thousands of them flock here and offer some great photo opportunities.

Fabulous page on Venezia! It was just two weeks ago that I was there but it seems like forever ago and yesterday, all at once. I agree -- I love getting lost in Venice.
