Venice was my last stop on the long road of my Italian vacation. As I moved north from Rome through Tuscany and into Venice, the weather turned from sunny skies to gray, wet and cold and yet, in this magical city, none of that dampened my mood. Venice is like nowhere else. My first five minutes were spent walking out of the train terminal into a watery world of old and beautiful buildings and bridges. It struck me how different Venice appears compared to anywhere else and yet, how familiar it was to me. Looking around for the first time, I saw the palaces lining the Grand Canal and the narrow streets fading away from my view like a dozen separate mazes and I knew I could be nowhere else in the world. After visiting bustling Rome and tourist-filled Florence, it was literally cathartic to come to a place where the air is filled with only the soothing sounds of lapping water and quiet footsteps. |

It was just two weeks ago that I was there but it seems like forever ago and yesterday, all at once.
