Rio de Janeiro is known as the cidade maravilhosa and one visit and you'll see that it lives up to its moniker. There are cities in the world that you've imagined your whole life and when you finally make it there you're forced to pinch yourself as a reminder that the moment is real. Sometimes when I walk around New York, similar feelings come over me and I have to stop and acknowledge that yes, I'm actually in New York. Rio is the same. After all, images of Sugarloaf mountain like the one in this picture have been attacking our senses for most of our lives. We've all seen the amazing Christ the Redeemer statue that blesses the city from atop of Corcovado hill for years in travel magazines and in movies, but seeing it in person crystalizes all of those murkier images into something real and dramatic and I guarantee the sight of it will not disappoint.
Rio was the first stop that I made on this, my first trip to South America. And while the weather didn't quite live up to my expectations, the beauty of the city itself far surpassed what I had previously imagined.

Is Guarana the Brazilian equivalent of Jolt? LOL I may have to get me some of that! Leaving in 2 1/2 weeks, I'm hoping for slightly better weather than you had!!! Great page :-)
Mark, Thanks for surfing and rating my pages. You've done a brilliant job in your Rio page. I am not sure what is best if the pictures or your tips. I also saw the little monkey in Sugar Loaf i thought it was a sort of marmoset.
I am excited about the opportunity to go to Rio at some point!
Mark, You know... being a "Carioca" is more a state of mind... one doesn't have to be born in Rio to be one. And you are, for sure, a great one! You really got the spirit! Thanks for these wonderful pages on my beloved city!!!!
Great Rio page´s too, thanks for bringing my city´s name so up, as my friend Steve (sonador3) said you are reputation, is very well deserved Cheers Thiago
Schmatz ! Feijoada and Caipirinha - what more do we need when in Brazil on Saturdays.......
Outstanding Brazil and Argentina pages. Your Rio pages will be printed and taken with me as a guide in April. Thanks Mark, your reputation is well deserved!
Wow, sounds that you had a fantastic time in Rio ..only the waether wasn't too much luck! I liked your detailed infos..and hope that you will get back there one day to enjoy Rio with sun!!!
No question, spectacular views, no matter the weather. Interesting information on feijoada--something that has yet to cross my palate, but I'm sure it will in days to come.
