Upscale grocer - Salvador da Bahia
Perini: Upscale grocer Perini Review

Perini was also a grocery store located in Barra, but this was closer to the shoreline facing the ocean on the south side of town. It's a lot smaller than Bompreco, but it had some interesting items and some great pastries. A little more upscale and expensive, but a good store.

Gettin' hungry yet? - Salvador da Bahia
Bompreco: Gettin' hungry yet?

There was a grocery store right behind my hotel in Barra, so I figured there was no need for me to overpay by using the refrigerator in my hotel room. Instead, I grabbed a few drinks and snacks here and paid a lot less.

Great mall - Salvador da Bahia
Shopping Barra: Great mall Shopping Barra - Mall Review

This mall was a convenient place for me to stop and check out shopping, Salvador style. It's a modern mall with some interesting Brazilian shops that I had never heard of before. On the whole, the clothing seems to be a very high quality here and prices are a lot better than in the States.

All in one for souvenirs - Salvador da Bahia
Mercado Modelo: All in one for souvenirs Mercado Modelo Review

Located just across the street from the base of the Elevator Lacerdo is this great market. If you're looking for cheap items like tee shirts, snow globes or magnets for your fridge, you'll find them here. Or, if you're looking for some paintings done by local artists or some hand-made Afro-Brazilian crafts, this is the place to come. I bought a mask from the region for 50 reais. He was asking 85, so be sure to bring your bargaining skills.

Various - Salvador da Bahia
Pelourinho for Souvenirs: Various Mercado Modelo Review

All over Pelourinho, you'll find souvenir shops where you can buy local crafts, clothing, postcards and the like, however, you might find the quality of the local crafts will be better in some of the finer shops or even at the Mercado Modelo in lower town.

Fancy jewels - Salvador da Bahia
H. Stern: Fancy jewels

You'll see this store all over Brazil and it is the country's best known jeweler. They specialize in creating original pieces using fine jewels and stones from Brazil. Many of their designs have been worn by famous Hollywood stars. I took a look at some of their products at the store in Rio and they really were quite attractive, but not in my budget.

Shopping with the locals - Salvador da Bahia
Dos Sapateiros Street: Shopping with the locals

If you walk down the hill from Pelourinho on the side away from the bay, you'll run into this street. There are plenty of clothing shops here as well as electronics and many other things. Very few of the stores are geared toward the tourists, but when they saw me pull out my camera, all of the shopkeepers seemed eager to attract me to their stores.

Nice souvenirs - Salvador da Bahia
Not sure?: Nice souvenirs

I stopped in this shop on Rua Teixeira Mendes just across from Sorrisa da Dada restaurant. I thought this girl who worked here was beautiful so I used all my Portuguese words on her. That took about 30 seconds, so I resorted to browsing and ended up buying a few small souvenirs.
