Cannaregio and the Strade Nuova and other Venice, Italy Off The Beaten Path Tips

CANNAREGIO -- This area lies between the train station and the Rialto area. Go north of the Strade Nuova (the main street running through the area) and just wander down the streets ... watch the daily life of these wonderful people ... see how they live ... this is the true Venice! One of the best times to wander the streets is between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. when the local people are coming home from work. Watch conversations between a young worker standing on the sidewalk and his grandmother leaning out her third story window. Watch workmen gather together for a glass of wine at one of the local wine bars. Watch mother strolling along with their babies as they stop to talk with friends or relatives. (Family is very important to Italians ... it is a treat to watch them living life.)

Dogs -- Venetians love their dogs! And since there aren't any cars, many walk with their masters without leashes. Didn't see a single one that was misbehaved. Many shop and restaurant owners have their dog and they wander in and out at will. Enjoy watching them ... they're wonderful.
