During each of my trips between the US and Europe, Frankfurt has been my gateway to the old continent. I have flown through Frankfurt about 8 or 10 different times in the past seven years for various reasons, mostly while living in Dudeldorf village.
I have always enjoyed my time in the city along the Main River, especially the unique architecture of the Roemer, the peaceful walks along the river's edge, and the often-rowdy nightlife of Sachsenhausen.
Though Frankfurt is only the 5th largest city in Germany, it is home to Germany's largest airport, the busiest train station, and the German stock exchange. The city is also a major financial center with over 200 banks.
In February 2006, I made my most recent visit to Frankfurt. I landed at the airport, arriving from Vienna, then took a quick train to Hauptwache. After stowing our bags in a locker, we headed to the Ziel and a scenic overlook on top of a 7-story building. Then it was past Paulskirche and to Roemerberg and the Kaiserdom. We stopped in the Roemer area for a quick frankfurter, beer, and gluhwein. Next we went back to the Ziel and walked a ways, then cut across a bridge to Alte Sachsenhausen. We stopped for another beer, then found a hotel near the bar district.
After dark, we wandered back across the river and had dinner in the Roemer area, picked up our bags at the U-Bahn station, then headed over the Eiserner Stern for a night of drinking in Sachsenhausen. We hit a few bars and talked with a few locals, then headed to bed relatively early.
The next morning, we went back to Liebfrauenkirche area for breakfast, then jumped on the S-Bahn for the Airport and our flight back to the US.

Yes the Kyalami bar in Sachsenhausen and I must tell you I love this tiny watering hole, for it is where I met my wife on a magic evening and it's been a fairy tale since then. The Americans are cooll. Don't worry .
I enjoyed reading your Frankfurt page. There's so much more to this city than banks.
Guess the Kyalami is closed for already quite some time ....
Beautiful snow pictures. Reminds me of my time in Switzerland. Now I want to see Germany in the winter. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed your visits here in Frankfurt. I didn't know the Eiserne Steg was originally built for transporting beer.
