Since my first visit to Richmond in about 2000, this has been my favorite city in the South. Located along the James River on the eastern side of Virgina, Richmond is the state capital and was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Founded in 1737, Richmond became the capital of Virginia in 1780 during the Revolutionary War . In 1781 famous American traitor Benedict Arnold, now fighting for the British, burned Richmond. The State Capitol Building was designed by Thomas Jefferson and completed in 1788. Near the end of the Civil War, after a long siege, the retreating Confederates again destroyed much of the city to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Union Army.
Modern Richmond contains 200,000 people, and the city is now home to the AAA Richmond Braves, NASCAR's Richmond International Raceway, and Virginia Commonwealth University. The downtown area along the Canal and Shockoe Slip are lively centers of nightlife, entertainment and shopping, while numerous parks along the James River offer recreation opportunities.

It looks like historic Richmond would make a nice visit. The Sine Irish pub seems like a good spot to go for a beer. I will need to remember the quote: it was a perfect success, except that it did not succeed.
