“Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.” Gandhi

Harmony, PA is a tiny town of less than 1000 people located just off I-79, 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Before the European settlers came to Western Pennsylvania, the area was home to the Erie, Seneca, Delaware, Shawnee, and Iroquois tribes.

Near here in 1753, George Washington and a guide, Christopher Gist, were traveling to Fort Le Boeuf just before the start of the French and Indian War. After they were shot at by local natives, Washington and Gist nicknamed the area Murdering Town.

This village was established in 1804 by German immigrant George Rapp, as a home for his German Harmonist Society. In 1814, this society of communal religious pacifist separatists, sold their town to Mennonites and established the town of New Harmony, Indiana.

Following the departure of the Harmonists, a Mennonite community thrived for years in Harmony. Later Harmony became a vacation town, a short distance from the hustle and pollution of industrial Pittsburgh.

The Harmonist Society returned to Pennsylvania in 1824 and established the town of Economy, now part of Ambridge, PA, but preserved as a historic site called Old Economy Village. This historic village is much more touristy than tiny Harmony. Old Economy Village is located 20 miles southwest of Harmony.
