Littlest Big City in the World?

by Ewingjr98 - last update: Jun 23, 2009

My only visit to Reno was in October 2008 during some cold weather and an early snowfall. After a harrowing journey over snow Mount Rose, we arrived at the Reno Plaza in the evening. After checking in we decided to walk the 3/4 mile or so in frigid weather down to the strip and check out the gaming and nightlife. After an uneventful night of watching Major League Baseball playoffs at the soon to be replaced Fitzgerald's Casino, we had dinner at the Cal-Nev Casino, then returned to the hotel. The next day we were up early and on the road across the deserts of Nevada.
Everyone says Reno's strip is much different then Vegas' strip. Sure it's much smaller, but it's also less touristy, therefore more inexpensive. I've also heard the machines here might give better odds to lure customers away from the big city.

The nicer places on the strip are Harrah's, Silver Legacy, Eldorado, and Circus Circus. Some of the older, slightly more run down places on the strip include Fitzgeralds, the Cal-Neva, the Gambler, the Golden Phoenix, the Nugget, and probably others.

Reno looks fantastic, but driving those passes would be no fun. Looks like it was all worth it. Beautiful Reno HP photograph.

Nothing like driving over the Sierras in a winter storm. Hopefully you found the scenery at Lake Tahoe to be well worth dealing with chains.

I like the picture of Reno with the sun setting behind the clouds. I see the slow driving coming down from Tahoe made for some good picture-taking :).
