Delaware Memorial Bridge

When Delaware died they built this bridge in her memory...

Oh wait, wrong bridge...

The Delaware Memorial Bridge was actually built by Delaware in memory of those Americans who gave their lives in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. The world's longest twin suspension bridge, the Delaware Memorial connects New Jersey and Delaware on I-295 and is maintained by the $3 toll drivers pay when traveling east to west.

I-495 - Wilmington

I-495

Interstates 95, 495, and 295 around Wilmington

Interstate 95 runs near the north side of Wilmington and Interstate 495 passes a few miles south of the city, both in a generally east-west direction. I-295 branches off of western I-95 and 495 interchange then passes over the Delaware Memorial Bridge into New Jersey. The 23 miles of I-95, 11 miles of I-495, and 6 miles of I-295 are the only interstate routes in the entire state of Delaware.

I-95 runs from the Maryland-Delaware state line to the Pennsylvania state line. Where it enters the state from Maryland there is a $4 toll plaza blocking the highway. In some parts of its short 23 miles in the state, the highway is eight lanes, while around Wilmington, it narrows to just four lanes. Throughout its distance the speed limit is 55 mph. I-95 passes through Baltimore to the south and Philadelphia to the north.

I-495 runs from I-95 south of Wilmington near Newport, along the Delaware River, then merges back with I-95 at the Delaware-Pennsylvania state line. For its entire distance the highway is six lanes, it is very straight, and the speed limit is 65 mph. It is typically a faster route than I-95 if you are not stopping in the city.

I-295 runs from Delaware across the Delaware River and into New Jersey. In New Jersey its between the Delaware River and the NJ Turnpike just south and east of Philadelphia before reconnecting to I-95 in New Jersey, 73 miles from its origin.

Wilmington to Dover and points south - Wilmington
Wilmington to Dover and points south

There are a few ways to get between Dover and Wilmington depending on how much cash you have. Driving is the easiest and most convenient. If you drive on Route 1, expect to pay a few dollars in tolls, and the trip will take 45 minutes... use EZPass to make the trip even faster. Route 13 has no tolls, but the drive will take well over an hour.

Greyhound has a route between Dover and Wilmington.

Delaware Regional Transportation also has buses to Wilmington. Bus 301 is an express but that takes a little over an hour and costs $4.50. Buses depart about every 30 minutes from the Wilmington Train Station to Dover's Water Street Station.
