"Castroville -- Artichoke Capital of the Universe" Castroville by Ewingjr98

Castroville Travel Guide: 11 reviews and 45 photos

For most visitors to Monterey County, Castroville is just an intersection they pass on the way to more popular and famous spots such as Carmel, Monterey, and Big Sur. Few realize the agricultural significance of this small community that produces 75 percent of the nations artichoke crop. To get a feel for this farming town of 6,000, stop by during the annual artichoke festival when 20,000 visitors flood the town center eating artichokes, listening to music, and spending money.

You gotta lovel these small towns, they have the best festivals even if your not crazy about the particular fruit or vegetable:) Love that mural! Nice page!

Excellent page on the off-the-beaten-path location. I drove through here many times without really ever stopping. I’ll need to head down for the Artichoke Festival sometime. - Steve
