Carmel Valley is a unique area of fancy vineyards next to some pretty run down $500,000 shacks. Probably the best thing to do in the area is visit the large Garland Ranch Regional Park with its 50 miles of hiking trails, plus historic sites, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints. Many tourists are drawn to this valley because of the numerous vineyards and wine tastings in the area. There is also a good selection of restaurants from touristy and expensive places like Wills Fargo to tiny local cafes such as Rosie's Cracker Barrel.

Carmel Valley was a destination for the rich and famous from the early 1900s when Monterey's Del Monte Hotel operated a guest ranch in the valley. Later many Hollywood greats settled here, and several including Doris Day, Merv Griffin, and Clint Eastwood still call Carmel Valley home.

So many people do not realize what wide open spaces California still has and the lovely quaint towns we have. I enjoyed the tour!

Nice page on this area. Looks like there may be some good local wine tasting there. Garland Ranch Regional Park looks like a nice spot.
