The Temple Street Night Market is a large area filled with street vendors and small store fronts selling just about everything. Veggies, meat, toys, clothes, grocery stores, and small restaurants cover every square inch or real estate, but most don't show up until around 9pm, so don't come too early. We wandered around here for only 30 minutes to an hour, stopped for dinner, then hit the bars in Kowloon. The Project for Public Spaces named the Temple Street Night Market one of60 of the world's Great Public Spaces!

Things To Do: Hong Kong Avenue of Stars

|
The Hong Kong Avenue of Stars is similar to Hollywood's Walk of Fame, with the names of famous actors and actresses embedded in the sidewalk. Hong Kong's has a much better view than Hollywood's, looking over the harbor toward Hong Kong Island. However, unless you are from Hong Kong or are a huge fan of Hong Kong movies, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li may be the only actors of whom you've ever heard. Along with the names on the sidewalk, you will see statues of some of the stars, you can eat at the food stalls, or you can relax on the benches.

Our first stop in Kowloon was the somewhat-famous clock tower near the water. The clock tower was built in 1915 at the end of the Kowloon-Canton Railway. It took a lot of effort by the Hong Kong Heritage Society to save this landmark.

Kowloon Park is an island of tranquility surrounded by the mad rush of Kowloon. The park has fountains, a Chinese Garden, a huge swimming pool, a Mosque, a Sculpture walk, and an aviary. Kowloon Park is open daily from 0630 to 2000.

Western Market is a high end shopping area in a beautifully restored red brick building. This market also contains a large food court. The building was originally built in 1906 as a fresh fruit and vegetable market. From Western Market you can take the walking bridge over to the waterfront area or you can walk south to the Cat Street antique markets.

During your visit to Hong Kong, you will soon tire of tall buildings, heavy traffic, and street markets. Hong Kong Park in Central is the ideal place to relax and get away from the big city rush. It has a huge aviary, a tower offering a good view of the city, and two peaceful ponds. During my visit there were several couples taking wedding photos, many people relaxing on the benches, and even a chorale group practicing. A great place to just relax!

Victoria Peak is the highlight of a visit to Hong Kong and a must-see. We took the tram late in the evening, stayed throughout the sunset, then got a great view of the city at night. The peak is very touristy, but has a few good restaurants and bars. The biggest drawback is the huge, ugly tower built for us tourists. Take the tram to complete a great experience. The tram station is in Central near Hong Kong Park.

Victoria Harbor gives the city of Hong Kong much of its character and many of its picturesque images. The harbor is always busy with ferries, a few barges, and even an occasional sampan or two. The best views of the harbor are from Kowloon and Central, but nothing beat taking the Star Ferry between Kowloon and the island.

Officially called "The Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist", and better known as simply St John's, this church was built by the British colonial mission in 1848. This beautiful and peaceful structure was designed in the shape of a cross. Built long before the skyscrapers, it now sits nestled between several of these massive towers.

junecorlett Fri May 22, 2009 11:06 UTC We stayed here - I would also rather save my money for Bangkok | Nemorino Sat Sep 22, 2007 19:39 UTC Brings back memories of a great week I spent in Hong Kong on R&R from Vietnam in March 1965. It was cool there, and I could walk around the whole week without a weapon. I don't think there was an ugly tower on Victoria Peak at that time. | Jim_Eliason Sat Apr 2, 2005 21:41 UTC Nice page! | Randy121 Sun Nov 7, 2004 23:59 UTC Thanks for the information.
