General Tips: Money in Hong Kong

Favorite Thing: Hong Kong money is called the Dollar. Despite Hong Kong's recent merge with China, the money has not changed significantly (except for the frequently changing printed-by line with "Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" or "Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited" or even "Bank of China" printed on the top. All are still legal in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Money is never much of a problem in the city. ATMs are relatively common in the city. Money exchanges are also easy to ... though we got a much better exchange rate at the money exchange on Canton & Peking Road than the exchanger in the airport. American credit cards are also widely accepted at the bigger stores and restaurants. Plan to use cash at the small shops & restaurants as well as the markets.

Brings back memories of a great week I spent in Hong Kong on R&R from Vietnam in March 1965. It was cool there, and I could walk around the whole week without a weapon. I don't think there was an ugly tower on Victoria Peak at that time. | Jim_Eliason Sat Apr 2, 2005 21:41 UTC
